Sambal is usually made of chili sauce and other ingredients, and belacan is shrimp paste cake. Sambal belacan, on the other hand is made of fresh red chillies or bird’s eye chillies, belacan and other ingredients, mix and made into a paste until perfection.
Traditionally, sambal belacan are pounded into a paste using a pestle and mortar. However, it is now mostly made with electric bender for larger quantities. The sambal belacan textures usually depend on the cooks, some might like it to be finely pounded, while some may want a little chili pieces visible.
