Assam Laksa is a Malaysian famous spicy noodle soup especially in the northern part of the peninsular. The main ingredients for assam laksa include shredded fish, normally mackerel or sardin, and finely sliced vegetables including cucumber, onions, red chillies, pineapple, lettuce, common mint, laksa leaf (Vietnamese mint or Viatnamese coriander) and bunga kantan (torch ginger bud). Assam laksa is served with rice noodles or rice vermicelli. For some people, they like to top off the laksa with petis udang, a thick sweet shrimp paste.
Assam is the Malay word for any ingredients that makes a dish tastes sour like tamarind, gelugur or kokum. Assam Laksa typically uses asam keping (kokum).
