PHYSICS F5 I ELECTROMAGNETISM I TRANSFORMER I PART 1

PHYSICS F5 I ELECTROMAGNETISM I TRANSFORMER I PART 1

Knowledge you should achieved after following this lesson;

1. A transformer consists of a primary input coil with Np turns and secondary output coil with Ns turns. Both coils are linked magnetically by a soft iron core.

2. An AC creates an alternating magnetic field in the core which links the two circuits.

3. The alternating magnetic field in the secondary coil induces a current in the secondary circuit.

4. A DC voltage will not induce a current as there is no changing magnetic field in the secondary coil.

5. For an ideal transformer, the ratio of the number of turns in the primary and secondary coil, determines the ratio of input and output voltages, where;
Vp/VS = Np/Ns

6. A step-up transformer;
(i). Converts low AC voltage to a higher AC voltage
(ii). Ns greater than Np
(iii). Vs greater than Vp

7. A step-down transformer;
(i). Converts high AC voltage to a lower AC voltage
(ii). Ns less than Np
(iii). Vs less than Vp
