PHYSICS F5 I ELECTROMAGNETISM I TRANSFORMER I PART 2
Knowledge you should achieved after following this lesson:
A) Cause of energy loss in transformer and ways to reduce it;
1. Eddy current - Use laminated iron core that contain thin sheets of soft iron that are insulated from one another
2. Leakage of magnetic field lines - Wind the secondary coil on top of the primary coil
3. Magnetisation and demagnetisation of core - Soft iron core is used as it is easily magnetize and demagnetize
4. Resistance of the coils - Thick wires made of copper or silver used to make the coil as they have a low resistance
B) The efficiency of a transformer:
1. Efficiency is the measure of power transmitted from the primary to the secondary circuit , and is defined by
Efficiency = ( Power Output / Power Input ) x 100%
= ( VsIs / VpIp ) x 100%
2. A well-designed transformers have efficiency up to 99%
